Dear Thomas,

Last month, the historic ruling in CCJEF v. Rell exposed the shortcomings of our education system and broken policies that our leaders, families and students have known about for a long time. None of these problems are new, but some of our leaders have been either unwilling or unable to enact the bold, comprehensive change needed to solve them.

The ruling was a powerful call to action that we must answer. The truth is, our state lawmakers never really needed a judge to tell us to do what is right for students: providing our kids equal access to a high-quality education.
Fortunately, some of our state leaders are taking important steps towards answering that call.

Last week, Connecticut’s Black and Puerto Rican Caucus stepped forward and held an informational hearing to learn more about the CCJEF ruling and begin discussing their next steps.

I was invited to share a summary of the ruling and its policy implications with Caucus members. You can find the highlights of the presentation on Storify and watch the entire discussion here.

We are encouraged by the Caucus’ desire to lead by gathering information and ideas to make informed decisions. This was a solid first step and more must be done. Far too many kids are being denied the opportunities they need in our unfair educational system. We cannot let another year pass as children languish in schools that are not meeting their needs.

Today’s students are counting on you to fight for them. Click here to urge our state leaders to act now to solve these urgent, pressing problems in our education system that the CCJEF ruling laid bare for all the public to see.
Together, we can fix our education and ensure that all kids in our state get the high-quality education they need and deserve.

Thanks for all you do,

Jen
